How to get to Kamikochi from Tokyo
Option 1: Travel through Matsumoto
For most first-time visitors, traveling through Matsumoto is the most flexible and reliable option.
- Travel from Shinjuku to Matsumoto by JR Limited Express Azusa or highway bus.
- At Matsumoto Station, take the Alpico Railway Kamikochi Line to Shin-Shimashima Station. The train ride takes about 30 minutes.
- Transfer at Shin-Shimashima to a reserved bus bound for Kamikochi. The bus ride takes about 60 minutes.
The full journey usually takes around 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on your connection in Matsumoto.
My recommendation: Stay one night in Matsumoto and leave early the following morning. You will reach Kamikochi with more time and energy to enjoy the scenery.
Option 2: Take a direct bus from Shinjuku
Seasonal direct buses connect Shinjuku with Kamikochi. This is the easiest option because no transfer is required, but services do not operate on every date and popular departures can sell out.
Reservations normally open one month before the travel date. Check the operating calendar carefully before building your itinerary around this bus.
How to get to Kamikochi from Osaka or Kyoto
Option 1: Take the seasonal direct bus
Direct buses operate between Osaka, Kyoto, and Kamikochi during the open season. The journey takes approximately 6 to 7 hours and requires an advance reservation.
This route is convenient when its operating dates match your trip. However, it may not run every day, so check the official timetable before booking accommodation.
Option 2: Travel through Nagoya and Matsumoto
- Take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka or Kyoto to Nagoya.
- Continue from Nagoya to Matsumoto by JR Limited Express Shinano or a reserved highway bus.
- Take the Alpico Railway from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima.
- Transfer to the reserved bus for Kamikochi.
This route involves more transfers but provides more flexibility when the direct bus is unavailable.
How to get to Kamikochi from Nagoya
The most dependable route from Nagoya is through Matsumoto.
- Travel from Nagoya to Matsumoto by JR Limited Express Shinano or highway bus.
- Take the Alpico Railway from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima.
- Transfer to a reserved bus from Shin-Shimashima to Kamikochi.
Limited direct services from Nagoya may operate on selected summer dates. If one matches your itinerary, it can reduce the number of transfers, but the Matsumoto route is generally easier to plan around.
How to get to Kamikochi from Takayama
Takayama is the best gateway for travelers coming from Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, or the Hokuriku region.
- Take a Nohi Bus from Takayama Nohi Bus Center to Hirayu Onsen. The ride takes about 60 minutes.
- Change at Hirayu Onsen for the shuttle bus to Kamikochi. This section takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
The local buses between Takayama, Hirayu Onsen, and Kamikochi do not normally require reservations. Purchase your ticket at the ticket window or vending machine before boarding.
Getting to Kamikochi by rental car
You cannot drive directly into Kamikochi. Choose your parking area based on the direction you are coming from:
- From Matsumoto: Park in the Sawando area, then take a shuttle bus or taxi.
- From Takayama: Park at Akandana or in the Hirayu area, then take a shuttle bus or taxi.
The final ride from either parking area usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Parking, buses, and roads can become crowded on weekends, during the Obon holiday period, and throughout the autumn foliage season.
Bus reservations and ticket tips for 2026
- Reserve the Matsumoto route: All buses between Shin-Shimashima/Matsumoto and Kamikochi require reservations.
- Book early: Reservations generally open one month before departure.
- The Alpico train is separate: The train between Matsumoto and Shin-Shimashima does not require a seat reservation.
- Carry some cash: Ticket machines for the Alpico Railway at Matsumoto Station accept cash, but not IC cards or credit cards.
- Reserve your return bus: There is no direct return bus from Kamikochi to Matsumoto. Take the bus to Shin-Shimashima, then transfer to the train.
- Do not miss your reserved bus: A reservation is tied to a specific departure, and a later bus may be full.
Where should you get off in Kamikochi?
Most buses stop at Taisho Pond before reaching the main Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
- Get off at Taisho Pond if you want to begin with a scenic walk toward Kappa Bridge.
- Stay on until Kamikochi Bus Terminal if you have large luggage, limited walking time, or want to reach Kappa Bridge quickly.
For a first visit with light luggage, starting at Taisho Pond and walking toward Kappa Bridge is a beautiful introduction to the area.
Which route is best for you?
- Most flexible from Tokyo or Nagoya: Travel through Matsumoto.
- Fewest transfers from Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto: Use a seasonal direct bus when available.
- Coming from Shirakawa-go or Kanazawa: Travel through Takayama and Hirayu Onsen.
- Using a rental car: Park at Sawando or Akandana/Hirayu and continue by shuttle bus.
Frequently asked questions
When is Kamikochi open in 2026?
Public transportation to Kamikochi operates from April 17 to November 15, 2026. Some hotels, restaurants, and shops may open later in April or close before the final day of the season.
Can I use the Japan Rail Pass for the entire journey?
No. A JR Pass may cover eligible JR trains to Matsumoto, but it does not cover the private Alpico Railway or the bus from Shin-Shimashima to Kamikochi.
Can Kamikochi be visited as a day trip from Tokyo?
It is possible, but the day will be long and your time in Kamikochi will be limited. Staying in Matsumoto or inside Kamikochi for one night creates a much more relaxed trip.
Can I visit Kamikochi in winter?
Normal sightseeing services stop from November 16 to April 16. Hotels, shops, and regular buses are closed, and winter entry should be treated as a serious mountain activity rather than an ordinary sightseeing trip.
Final thoughts
Kamikochi may look remote on a map, but the journey becomes simple once you choose either Matsumoto or Takayama as your gateway.
For most international visitors traveling from Tokyo or Nagoya, I recommend the Matsumoto route. If you are coming from western Japan, compare the seasonal direct bus with the route through Nagoya and Matsumoto.
Reserve the important bus sections early, leave extra time for mountain connections, and check the latest official timetable before departure. The view waiting at the end of the journey is more than worth the planning. 🇯🇵
